Outstanding Midlands businesses on short-list for awards

The shortlists for the annual Black Country Chamber Awards was announced at the chamber's Business is Good for the Black Country exhibition.

The free event at Wolverhampton Racecourse last Thursday featured 50 exhibition stands.

The finalists in the achievement in international business category, sponsored by Wolverhampton Racecourse, are: Dudley College, Walsall College and Concept Steels.

For manufacturer of the year, sponsored by PP Business Improvement, they are: A&M EDM,

Alucast, Midland Pressure Diecasting, Lift & Engineering Services and Metsec.

In the running for the award for excellence in innovation, sponsored by KEEN are: University of Wolverhampton, R&R (Midlands), Thompson AVC and Clarkwood Engineering.

Those up for the award for commitment to people development, sponsored by Central Campus Sandwell College, are: The Midcounties Co-operative, Access to Business and Wolverhampton Racecourse.

The finalists in professional services firm of the year,sponsored by Citroën, are: Higgs & Sons, Crowe Clark Whitehill and Handelsbanken Wolverhampton.

Contesting the small and medium-sized enterprise apprentice employer of the year award, sponsored by Business Skills, a division of Stourbridge College, are: Energy Angels, Clarkwood Engineering and Thompson AVC.

David Leggett, manufacturing director of Oldbury-based Metsec, said "We are proud to have been shortlisted as a finalist in the BCCC manufacturer of the year award, this recognizes the hard work and dedication of our employees that has helped us become the company we are today."

David Jukes, chairman of the chamber judging panel, said: "The standard of nomination was extremely high this year, the judging panel and I had to make many a tough decision.

The Business is good for the Black Country Awards lunch, sponsored by Business Skills, will take place on November 29 at Wolverhampton Racecourse and will feature as keynote speaker Tony Collins, chief executive of Virgin Trains.
