Ageing M42 bridge near Birmingham Airport to be demolished and rebuilt after serious defects found
Engineers have carried out more detailed investigations into the structure
An ageing bridge over the M42 is set to be demolished and completely rebuilt after inspections uncovered deterioration including damaged concrete and corroded steelwork.
National Highways has confirmed the bridge on the northern section of the Junction 6 roundabout, close to Birmingham Airport and the NEC, will need to be replaced to ensure it remains safe for motorists.
The structure, which is around 50 years old, was initially placed under a weight restriction in July after defects were discovered during inspections.

It was then closed completely just days later as the condition of the bridge deteriorated further.
Engineers have since carried out more detailed investigations into the structure and considered whether the existing bridge could be strengthened.
However, National Highways said this would not provide a suitable long-term solution and the decision has now been taken to demolish the bridge and build a replacement.
The organisation said the work was necessary because of deterioration to the concrete and corrosion affecting steel reinforcement within the structure.

Plans are now being developed for the demolition and reconstruction, with National Highways looking to coordinate the work with planned closures of the M42 associated with nearby HS2 construction in an attempt to reduce disruption.
Officials are also considering whether a temporary bridge could be installed while the permanent replacement is constructed.
The closure affects the northern side of Junction 6, a major interchange linking the M42 with the A45 and providing access towards Birmingham Airport, the NEC and surrounding communities.
Existing diversion routes will remain in place until further notice while the replacement plans are developed.
National Highways said further information, including dates for the demolition and construction work and details of any associated road closures, will be announced once plans have been finalised.
