Staffordshire is set to face strong winds and heavy rain this weekend as Storm Boelo brings unsettled weather to parts of the UK.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning covering Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, with very windy conditions expected to spread across northern parts of the country from Saturday afternoon (October 24).

The warning was updated at 8.42am on Saturday, October 24, and extended further south across northern England and into north Wales.

Gusts of between 55mph and 65mph are likely across affected areas, with exposed locations and coastal areas potentially experiencing gusts of 70mph to 80mph or more.

The strongest winds are expected across Scotland and the far north of England, with very windy conditions forecast to continue overnight and through much of Sunday before gradually easing from the south-west later in the day.

The Met Office warns that flying debris could cause injuries and damage to buildings and trees, including roof tiles being blown off and large branches or trees falling.

Travel disruption is also possible, with road, rail, air and ferry services potentially affected by delays and cancellations. Some roads and bridges could close, while power cuts may affect homes and other services, including mobile phone coverage.

The Met Office advises people to secure loose items outside their homes, such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences.

Residents are also encouraged to prepare for possible power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, mobile phone power banks and other essential items.

Anyone planning to travel should check road conditions and public transport timetables before setting off, and be prepared to change their plans if necessary.

The Met Office says weather warnings can change quickly and recommends keeping up to date with the latest forecast for your area.

The yellow warning has a medium likelihood of occurring, estimated at between 25 and 50 per cent, with the potential for significant impacts.
