Mild delays to public transport were also experienced due to the incident, with West Midlands Police officers and vehicles being spotted surrounding the cordon.

Express & Star journalist Kirsty-Louise Card, who was on the scene, said: "I was walking into Walsall bus station with a load of other commuters and saw the police around near HSBC and Walsall Leather Skills Centre.

"People stopped to have a look, but no one really knew what was going on.

"They closed it completely after I had walked past that side. I assumed it must have been to do with the pink suitcase left by the side of the road."

HSBC, which is situated next to where the cordon was located, have confirmed that the incident hasn't affected their operation times, and they remain open as per normal hours.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We received reports of a suspicious package on The Bridge, Walsall just before 6.45am this morning.

"A cordon was put in place as a precaution. The item was inspected and removed. This was a false alarm with good intent."
