Members of the RMT union driving Hackney Carriages in the city are due to stage the second of three strikes over pedestrianisation work in the city centre.

They will protest again over what they say is Lichfield District Council’s failure to address serious concerns over the new pedestrianised zone - the first action was taken on Monday.

Drivers say the pedestrianisation scheme - completed in  September 2024 - is having a damaging impact on their livelihoods, the safety of other road users, and access to ranks , and that their concerns have been repeatedly ignored by the councillors responsible for introducing the scheme.

The second planned go-slow protest route will again run from Frog Lane, past the Council House, along Birmingham Road to the Bowling Green roundabout and back to Frog Lane between 4.30 and 6.30pm.

A spokesperson for Lichfield District Council said: “We’re aware that taxi drivers would like continued access through pedestrianised areas and that there are concerns around the presence of Uber.

"Our focus remains on ensuring residents and visitors can enjoy Lichfield safely, day and night, with a range of transport options available including taxis, buses, trains and private hire.”
