Sandwell Council has announced that 23 vehicles were subjected to enforcement as part of their targeted operation to crack down on untaxed and abandoned vehicles in Smethwick

It comes after local residents and businesses raised concerns about ongoing problems with vehicles being left on public roads in the region, and cars being abandoned in the borough's business areas.

In response, the council's environmental protection team and the neighbourhood services team launched an operation to tackle the concerns, with West Midlands Police also supporting the efforts.

The environmental protection team led the coordinated effort alongside their partners, including Penham Excel and Serco, with the group placing a focus on Heath Street, Cranford Street, Fawdry Street, and Alma Street.

During the operation, the council said that 23 vehicles were subject to enforcement under DVLA Develved Partner Powers, with seven of those being removed from the highway.

Eighteen Penalty Charge Notices were also issued, as well as £1,600 worth of fines being imposed.

Heath Street also received a full street cleansing by Serco.

Councillor Suzanne Hartwell, Sandwell Council's deputy leader and cabinet member for neighbourhoods and community, said: "This operation is a great example of partnership working in action.

"Abandoned and untaxed vehicles not only cause disruption but also create an eyesore and safety hazard for residents and businesses. By working together, we’re making sure our streets are safer, cleaner and better maintained."
