Ticketless ‘tap-in-tap-out’ trams will see an end to much-loved West Midlands Metro conductors in new year
Infrastructure is being installed to make the Midland Metro ticketless – and to remove conductors from its trams.
West Midlands Metro bosses are planning to roll out a new ticketing system across the network, which currently runs between Wolverhampton and Birmingham, to make paying for tickets to travel on the tram faster, easier, and more convenient for passengers.
It says it wants to make paying for tickets to travel on the tram faster, easier, and more convenient for passengers.
But the system will see the end of conductors, a move that has dismayed many passengers who enjoy the human interaction on board services. Many of the conductors have worked on the trams for years and have become popular among those who regularly use the services.

Validator poles are now being installed at tram stops across the network, which will soon support a new system enabling customers to simply tap in and tap out to pay for their journey using a contactless bank card, travel pass or smart device.
