West Bromwich woman covered police officers in spit whilst begging public for help during botched escape from police car

A West Bromwich shoplifted kicked and spat at police officers whilst shouting for help from public as she tried to escape from a police car.

Leanne Garratt, 44, had been released from custody for shoplifting at Sainsbury's in Oldbury days before she returned to steal again on March 22, this year.

She was spotted by security staff after changing into a tracksuit she had stolen. After being arrested she became violent whilst being transported to Wolverhampton Police Station kicking and covering officers in phlegm. 

Garratt, of Bromford Road, West Bromwich, pleaded guilty to theft and three counts of assaulting an emergency workers and was sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Friday.

Prosecuting, Timothy Sapwell said: "She entered the store wearing sunglasses and picked out wine, flowers and a tracksuit from the shelves worth £156. She then changed into the tracksuit and exited via the self-service checkout where she was detained by security staff.

"Whilst in the office awaiting the police she displayed behaviour which raised concerns about her mental health."
