West Midlands Police and Staffordshire Police are taking part in a national amnesty scheme, between July 1 and July 31, where residents can hand in their ninja-style swords ahead of a national ban set to start next month.

The new ban, which comes into force on August 1, will see it made a criminal offence to possess ninja swords in private or make, import or sell them.

The new law - named Ronan's Law - follows years of campaigning by the family of 16-year-old Ronan Kanda, who was killed in Wolverhampton on June 29, 2022, in a case of mistaken identity. His two killers were equipped with 'ninja'-style blades.

Flouting the ban can lead to a prison sentence of up to six months, potentially increasing to two years under the new measures.

A ninja sword is defined as having a blade between 14in to 24in (35cm to 60cm) in length, with a tanto or reversed tanto-style point and a possible second blade attached at an angle.

Now, as part of a national initiative, Staffordshire Police and West Midlands Police have designated 12 stations where sword owners can take in their blades, with some able to receive compensation for their surrender.
