Watch: Car smashes into bus stop outside pub on busy route into Wolverhampton

A car has smashed through a bus stop outside a pub near Wolverhampton.

The red Suzuki could be seen wedged into the bus stop outside The Broadway pub on Lichfield Road, near to its junction with Broad Lane North, on Wednesday (June 18) morning.

The bus stop serves National Express West Midlands services including numbers 9 and 69, which run between Walsall and Wolverhampton.

Police were at the scene helping to direct traffic at around 8.30am.

The West Midlands Fire Service said a person had freed themselves from the vehicle when crews arrived at the scene.

A spokesman said: "A fire engine from Willenhall attended, arriving to find a car had come into collision with a bus stop.

"One person freed themselves from the vehicle before we arrived and was attended to by paramedics. Police colleagues were also in attendance. 

"Firefighters made the scene safe and cordoned off the affected bus stop."

The West Midlands Ambulance Service said the driver of the vehicle turned down assessment by ambulance crews.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said: "We were called to Lichfield Road, Wednesfield, Wolverhampton at 5.41am to reports of a car which had collided with a bus stop.

 "One ambulance attended. The driver, who appeared uninjured to ambulance crew, declined assessment."

There was congestion in the area, with traffic queuing as a result of the incident.

The route is the main commuter link between Bloxwich and the city.

National Express West Midlands has confirmed services are running as normal on the road.
