Convicted criminal Jamie Hopson, aged 31, of Vaughan Road, Moseley, Willenhall, was at the wheel of a VW Golf being pursued by officers including the police helicopter when he drove at speeds of up to 80mph, before going the wrong way round the Keyway Island at Portobello with the lights off on February 5.

There were several other vehicles on the roundabout when the incident happened at about 10.20pm.

Wolverhampton Crown Court Court sitting at Telford Magistrates Court on Tuesday heard that the officers following on the ground abandoned the chase due to the risks.

The defendant, who had no licence, then drove along the correct side of the dual carriageway into Willenhall town centre via Rose Hill and Market Place before the group decamped in Little Wood Street and fled on foot.
