Officers from West Midlands Police's Operation Guardian Taskforce were carrying out patrols in West Bromwich town centre yesterday (June 10).

At around 3pm, they spotted someone acting suspiciously in Mill Street.

After a short foot chase a boy was swiftly detained and the screwdriver was recovered from the area.

The 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, and he has now been charged.

He will be appearing before magistrates at a later date.

Operation Guardian is a specialist taskforce which tackles knife crime and youth violence.

There is particular emphasis on reducing knife crime in under 25-year-olds, through a range of tactics from plain-clothed operations to high visibility patrols.
