'Pawsome' work as police dogs to help detain suspected burglars and car thieves during night duty

West Midlands Police's K9s have been on their paws all night keeping the street safe during an especially successful night shift.

West Midlands Police's dog team are the bark around town after they pulled a successful night shift around the West Midlands, helping to detain a suspected burglary and five suspected car thieves. 

In Coventry, PD (Police Dog) Ugo and his handler Sergeant Simpson assisted the West Midlands Police traffic officers after a car failed to stop. Following a pursuit, the driver, along with a passenger, darted from the car on Bedford Road.

However, PD Ugo was hot on their trail, quickly tracking them down. The two men, aged 23 and 18, were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving.

In West Bromwich, officers on patrol spotted a suspected stolen car. 

The car initially failed to stop but eventually stopped and three people fled, running off through the gardens.

However, they couldn't outrun PD Hail and PC Evans, who found one of the occupants hiding in a garden, while the other two occupants were found nearby.

Two men, aged 22 and 19, and a 17-year-old were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle on Essex Avenue. 

Finally, in Birmingham, PD Maggie and handler, PC Cooling, were assisting officers who were looking for a suspected burglary after a phone shop had been broken into in Acocks Green in the early hours of this morning (9).

Following a search of a nearby building, PD Maggie and her 'super nose' found the suspect. The 23-year-old was arrested on suspicion of burglary. 

All suspects remain in police custody today. 

Inspector Leanne Chapman, from the dog unit, said: "Our police dogs and their handlers assist many of our other units each day to catch suspects. They often work alongside traffic cops, response officers and firearms officers and really are a credit to the force.

“Ugo, Hail and Maggie have worked hard overnight and have helped protect the public. We couldn’t do this job without them."
