250 jobs under threat in Stafford Argos distribution centre move
More than 200 jobs will be at risk if DHL pulls out of the Argos distribution centre in Stafford, it can be revealed.
DHL is contracted by Argos to run the warehouse at Acton Gate, but the logistics firm is proposing to transfer its operations to Bedford and Darlington.
A source, who asked not to be named, said 'around 250' workers from the courier firm are currently based at the site and 'all will be at risk' if the move goes ahead.
The first formal consultation meeting for workers will take place this week with officials from Unite.
Simon Green, regional officer at the union, said: "We are aware of the situation, which was announced to the union last week.
"While it is early days yet Unite the Union will be doing everything possible to safeguard our members jobs at Acton gate.
"We have the first formal consultation meeting this week and I am hopeful that the companies proposal for Acton gate will be much clearer following this meeting."
DHL staff currently run what is known as the 'two-man operation' at Acton Gate.
This means they are packaging heavy goods such as fridges and sofas. They also carry out some deliveries.
Despite DHL proposals to withdraw from Acton Gate, Argos' customer service and call centre is set to remain at Acton Gate, according to a company spokesperson.
DHL has refused to comment on potential job losses.
A statement released by the firm said: "Following the sale of Homebase to Westfarmers Ltd and the reduction in volumes this entails, DHL has announced proposals to repurpose its distribution centre at Acton Gate, Stafford.
"Should these proposals go ahead, Argos' operations will continue to be provided by DHL but moved to Marsh Leys and Faverdale, while Habitat's operations will transfer from Kettering and Marsh Leys to Acton Gate.
"Affected staff have been informed of the situation and will shortly enter into consultation with unions and site representatives to discuss these proposals.
"DHL would like to thank their Acton Gate team for their commitment at this difficult time and stress that the decision in no way reflects on their quality of work."
Argos currently leases its distribution centre from Zaad Property, at a cost of £2.17 million a year.
Zaad bought the mammoth 473,722 sq ft site from Legal & General back in 2014.
Around 750 people work at the site, which Argos has an agreement in place to lease until 2026.
