Travellers set up camp on side of road in West Bromwich
A group of travellers have moved on to a grass verge in West Bromwich – causing fears over clear-up costs.
Dozens of caravans could yesterday be seen on the land in Brandon Way.
Work is now under way from police and Sandwell Council to get enforcement notices to move them on to a new site.
White vans, trucks and cars are also on the grass verge.
West Bromwich Central ward Councillor Bawa Dhallu said the return of travellers to the town was disappointing.
He said he is worried about the cost of any clean-up operation after the group moves off the site.
Councillor Dhallu told the Express & Star: "They keep coming here and it shouldn't be like this.
"We have moved them from a couple of places recently - it's not good.
"Then when they do leave we have to clean up after them and it costs the council hundreds and hundreds of pounds every time to do that.
"It's disappointing that they are back."
He said he understood the concerns of local residents who would be affected by the travellers setting up camp.
"It's especially bad for people living near them with the noise, nuisance and the rubbish.
"We have tried to find a permanent site for travellers because when they move onto other sites it's makes life difficult for the public."
It is the second time in two months travellers have moved onto land in West Bromwich.
At the start of April they moved on to Shaftesbury House in High Street, with the council working with other authorities to provide an enforcement notice.
Councillor Dhallu said at the time: "It's an issue I've had to deal with a quite often in my time as councillor. Travellers just seem to move from one place to another."
