Mr Singh remains in custody after being arrested while on a family holiday in the Algarve. Indian authorities allege he was involved in the murder of a prominent Sikh politician and a bombing campaign in the north west of the country.

But politicians have been angered by Mr Singh's detention abroad as he has been granted asylum in the UK, with the Leader of the Opposition the latest to make his feelings clear.

In a letter to the Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa, he wrote: "This situation has caused a lot of concern to me and many others across the British parliament. It has also become a major issue within the very large Sikh community who live in the UK.

"Significantly, the case raises serious concerns about the rights of those who have been granted asylum and the extent to which they are able to travel within the European Union.

"I would be very grateful if you could look into the matter to examine why Mr Saini has not been returned to the UK and to see whether he can be allowed to return in the near future."
