Football matches cancelled as travellers arrive in West Brom
Football games in West Bromwich have been cancelled this weekend due to an illegal travellers camp.
Travellers moved to the Churchfields site on Wednesday November 4, setting up on the pitches and car park.
Cabinet member for regeneration and investment, Councillor Paul Moore, said: "Travellers have caused a lot of damage at the Churchfields playing fields and car park.
"They have ruined the football pitches and damaged metal palisade fencing. It's completely unacceptable.
"It's also unfair on kids and their parents that these matches have been cancelled.
"I am sorry for the inconvenience that's been caused.
"Illegal encampments will not be tolerated on council owned land and we will be working to get the pitches back to a decent standard very soon."
A number of incidents have been reported to both the local council and the police, who are working to move the travellers on as quickly as possible.
