Mini-islands petition launched by councillors

A petition calling for changes to 'dangerous' mini-islands in Wall Heath has been launched by two councillors.

Tories Natalie Neale and Nicola Richards have set up the call for signatures, but Labour counterpart Dave Tyler said suggesting any changes to a working road layout 'lacked common sense'.

The petition has gathered 200 signatories in the past week according to Councillor Neale, who said she is 'just waiting for a major accident to happen' at the islands on High Street.

The mini-islands, at the junction of Enville Road and Dudley Road, were put in place in 2008. Councillor Neale said the petition was in response to public concern about the islands' safety.

She added: "People don't know how to go around the islands and we need it to be changed before there is a major accident there.

"We're doing this petition to see what the community want to happen."

If the mini-islands were to be removed, Councillor Neale said she would prefer to have them replaced with either one large island or traffic lights. However, this would not be possible due to space constraints, according to Councillor Tyler.

"What we've got at the moment is a common sense solution," Mr Tyler added.
