Cannock Chase Council has commissioned a study into how the market which is based in Market Hall, can be improved.

Councillors have earmarked £10,000 for the review.

It comes after the authority agreed to allow a popular Friday street market to continue after a successful trial period.

Traders at the indoor market have raised concerns with council chiefs that the outdoor market had taken away their business.

Council leader George Adamson said: "The indoor market is in need of a refurbishment and we are committed to working with the traders to come up with the best solution.

"The outdoor market has seen a buzz return to the town but it is important we help traders in the indoor market as well."

A council report states: "Overall, the street market appears to have had a positive impact on the vitality

of the town centre.

But it added: "However, the positive impact of the street market has not been so great as to reverse the decline in visitors to the town centre experienced since the recession."
