Sandwell Council has voted to shut the site in November because it cannot afford the £30,000-a-week cost to run it.

Rebecca Blackman, senior manager at the Arts Council said: "While we understand there are pressures on local authority budgets, we are disappointed to hear Sandwell Council will not be extending the contract with the trust to run The Public as a dedicated arts centre."

Moves to shut the centre came despite protests to keep the iconic black and pink building open.
