The accident happened on the Willenhall Road at its junction with Deans Road near The Merry Boys pub, at around 7.45am.

The two cars crashed in the right hand lane, leaving one facing the wrong way.

It also blocked the path of a National Express West Midlands bus heading out of the city.

Queues stretched back towards Wolverhampton as police closed that side of the duel carriageway.

Commuter Natalie Griffiths was on the 529 service that was involved in the crash.

The 24-year-old, of Hilton Street in the city centre, said: "I was sitting on the top deck and heard an almighty bang.

"It was obvious what had happened.

"I got off the bus and saw one car squashed in the railings and another one inbetween that and the bus.

"There was a man stuck in the middle car - he couldn't get out - but people had got out of the other car and everyone seemed fine."

Miss Griffiths said Willenhall Road - part of her daily commute to work in Walsall - was always busy at that time of the morning.

"It's always packed on that road and cars are normally going pretty quickly."

She eventually caught a taxi to work instead of wait for the road to be cleared.

Paramedics also attended the scene but said there were no serious injuries.

By 8.30am the road had been reopened.
