Flash mob routine at Merry Hill
A "flash mob" of dancing ladies – most of them grandmothers – surprised shoppers with a routine performed in all their finery after having a makeover.
The eight women, aged in their 50s and 60s, who go to Zumba classes run by Age UK Dudley's Springboard Project, pumped up the volume and strutted their stuff in the middle of the Merry Hill Shopping Centre.
They looked at their best, dressed in posh Jacques Vert outfits as though they had just stepped out of a wedding reception, with their make-up freshly applied by Boots and Marks & Spencer.
Age UK Dudley spokesman Sandy Jones said: "The atmosphere was brilliant and the ladies looked stunning in their outfits.
"Boots and Marks & Spencer kindly did their make-up and they felt so confident. It just proved fashion and feeling good is for everyone.
"Spectators were drawn in by the energy of the ladies and had the chance to win prizes through lucky envelopes being given out."
Retired Brierley Hill GP Dr Anne Bundred, aged 64, who lives in Kinver, was one of the Zumba flash mob.
She said: "We were all in mother-of-the-bride outfits, whereas we normally do Zumba wearing a pair of trousers and a T-shirt.
"I've been doing Zumba with the Age UK Springboard project for about a year.
"We're all ladies of a certain age and we exercise to lively Latin American music. We learn routines and have a laugh – and it keeps us agile mentally and physically."
Dr Bundred, who used to be an Age UK trustee and still does voluntary work for the group, added: "Being part of the Zumba flash mob was enjoyable and fun."
Lyn Howard, from Jacques Vert, said "They all did a fantastic job and they all looked wonderful in our new spring and summer range".
Around 25 ladies attend three classes a week run by Age UK Dudley's Springboard project, which is supported by the Big Lottery and offers a variety of activities, courses, trips and social events for people aged 50 and over across the borough.
