Builders are on site at the major new complex which is being built on the corner of Moor Street and Richard Street South.
The centre, which will include a 25-metre pool, sports hall and indoor children's adventure play centre is due to open in summer 2014.
Sandwell Council last year approved DC Leisure's plans for the town centre scheme. The company will design, build, run and maintain the complex.
It will also include a learner pool, a sauna and steam room, a four-court sports hall, a 100-station fitness suite, and car parking.
Work is now under way on the site.
