Walsall manager Dean Smith today rated his side's maiden win of the League One season as the first step towards proving the doubters wrong.

The Saddlers visited a Notts County side with a 100 per cent start to their league campaign after two games and came away with a 1-0 win on Saturday.

After a 3-0 defeat to Doncaster on the opening day, questions were asked of Smith and his latest revamp of the team but they picked up their first point at Oldham in midweek.

That has been followed with a morale-boosting success at Meadow Lane and Smith believes that will give the players more impetus to silence their critics.

He said: "There had been a lot of questions aimed at us, like whether we are too young and are not physical enough. I think that win has proved to a few of the doubters that we can do it.

"It was a fantastic result for us and we are taking confidence from every game that we play, we know what we can do and what we are about.

"I said last week that we want to prove people wrong and we want to keep on doing that, it drives us. If we can do that, we have the makings of a good team.

"But it's small steps at a time."
