West Bromwich marathon legend 'Blind Dave' Heeley said he was thrilled with the support he received when he passed through his home town as part of his Top2Toe Challenge.

On the sixth day of Dave's challenge to cycle and run from John O'Groats to Land's End the 53-year-old, of Oak Road, visited Dartmouth Park and The Hawthorns.

Dave, who has been nominated as an Olympic torch bearer, had arrived in Staffordshire yesterday morning before he cycled to the park. Crowds had gathered to greet him and his team, offer refreshments and cheer him on.

He said: "The welcome has been absolutely fantastic, as soon as I arrived in the town, well in fact all the way, I have had people sounding their horns, cheering and giving me a wave as I have passed. It feels really good to come through West Bromwich and get such a response."

He added: "I won't lie to you I am tired. My legs are a little bit sore, and I am feeling my knee a bit. But we are getting on with it and we are all in good spirits."
