The number of tough questions about the quango accused of allowing controversial Black Country arts centre The Public to go £49 million over budget today reached 122.

Tom Watson, MP for West Bromwich East, has tabled a further 51 parliamentary questions on the back of 71 he asked about the Arts Council in December. He has now asked more questions this parliamentary session than any other MP.

It has been almost a month since Mr Watson posed questions about its restructuring and the Arts Council's involvement in allowing the gallery to swallow £72m of taxpayers' money.

He also wants to know about the redundancy package being paid to Arts Council England, West Midlands chief executive Sally Luton, who leaves in June 2010. She will receive about £211,000 made up of her salary for 18 months and a one-off pension lump sum of £90,000.

Today the Arts Council said its responses to the first batch of questions would be going to the House of Commons this week.

The latest set of 51 questions include asking the Arts Council how much it spent on "relaxation rooms" for staff at its head office in London and the cost of giving staff taxpayer-funded loans to buy cars, bicycles and scooters.

Mr Watson is also trying to find out how much was spent on spin by asking how many staff have "communications" in their job titles and how much was spent on "media monitoring".

He said today: "So far I've been disappointed by the slow response of the Arts Council.

"Just to remind them of their democratic responsibility to answer questions from Parliament I have tabled another 51 questions.

"Local people deserve answers about The Public, after all it was the Arts Council who were the lead players."

Arts Council England West Midlands head of communications Jo Forrest said: "We are responding to the first questions this week."

Last month the Arts Council said all the funding decisions about the gallery had been taken by other organisations, such as The Public founder Sylvia King's Jubilee Arts group.

But the Arts Council was the biggest funder of The Public and paid £32m of taxpayers' money to get it open.

It recently handed Sandwell Council £3m to get the West Bromwich gallery running.

The complete list of questions posed by Mr Watson.
