Health chiefs say they are doing all they can to try and cut the number of hospital operations cancelled at the last minute after it emerged more than 5,000 have been shelved in the Black Country and Staffordshire in the last year.

New figures released today show every hospital in the region has halted operations either on the day or day before they were due to take place on hundreds of occasions within the last year.
Many have been cancelled by hospitals but on hundreds of occasions it was due to patients failing to attend or deciding against surgery.
The highest number have been cancelled at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation trust.
Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, chief operating officer, Karen Morrey said today: "We do all we can to avoid the postponement of operations."
Other trusts said they do what they can to cut cancellations.
