The 6,170 sq ft Poundland store is due to open in the Guildhall Shopping Centre, Market Square next Thursday.

Among those taking jobs at the new discount store are 13 ex-Woolworths employees, including the store's former assistant manager, two supervisors and ten sales staff.

The team lost their jobs when the town's Woolworths branch, in Gaolgate Street, closed its doors in January following the collapse of the High Street chain.

The new Poundland store, which has been refurbished by the firm, has been taken over by bosses on a 10-year lease.

Poundland's Trading Director, David Coxon said: "We're absolutely thrilled to be opening another store and helping ex-Woolworths staff back into employment during these tough times.

"We have a very strong presence in the Midlands with our head office located in Willenhall.

"I'm sure the shoppers in Stafford are extremely savvy and will be delighted by the amazing value that Poundland offers.

"Everything is priced at just £1 and there are always lots of offers including "three for £1" and buy one get one free offers so you can walk away with even more.

"We have spent a significant amount of money to refurbish the old store to bring it in line with the rest of Poundland's store portfolio which is now up to 211 nationwide."

Stafford's former Woolworths store is also due to take on a new lease of life as sportswear chain Sports Direct.
