More than 15,000 people are expected to line the streets of West Bromwich tomorrow for a parade in honour of England's patron saint.

Organisers were today hoping that they would clear their last hurdle - the weather - in preparations for the annual parade which was nearly scrapped after its funding was controversially axed by Sandwell Council.

The council's event was taking place in Dartmouth Park today with madcap TV presenter Keith Chegwin joining in the fun.

Residents joining tomorrow's parade have been asked to leave their politics and alcohol at home. Trevor Collins, from the Stone Cross St George Association said: "We have had to fight long and hard for the right to march."
