The Queens Square development will be built on the former Britannia Assurance site next to the Express & Star offices. Developers Classic Construction, in Ironstone Road, Rawnsley, say the 4,500 sq ft site will feature two offices and four two-bedroom luxury apartments.

Each apartment will be finished to a high specification and will have an approximate floorspace of 750sq ft.

Over 30 jobs are expected to be created during the construction process.

The family-run business started by Melvin Follows, from Gentleshaw, has been running for over 20 years and has owned the site for a number of years. He now believes the time is right to start work. Investigative work has started this week and construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of December this year.

Two of the high-quality apartments could be offered for sale in 2010 at an approximate value of £170,000 while the remaining two could be offered for rent.

There will be five parking spaces on the site for the apartments but there will be no parking for the offices.

Paul Follows, a director of Classic Construction said the economic downturn had meant constructions costs on the project had fallen and the time was right to start work.

The 38-year-old said: "We are really pleased to be getting this going now. It is the same as the original planning application with the two offices and the four apartments."
