An historic church in Wednesbury could have a new vicar appointed by June as a deadline for applications draws closer.

St Bartholomew's Church, in Church Hill, Wednesbury, has been without a vicar since Rev Mark Bridgen left to work in Staffordshire in January last year.

The deadline for applications is May 14, with church bosses insisting it is normal for a delay to occur in the hunt for a replacement. Ii was not revealed how many applications there had been, but director of communications at the Diocese of Lichfield, Gavin Drake, said the future of the church was secure.

"The position is still being advertised and the deadline is May 14," he said.

"Anybody interested in applying for the position should obviously be a member of clergy.

"When a position like this comes up, it is not like a normal application. There are a number of posts in the past few years in which we have seen delays."

Mr Drake also praised the congregation for their fundraising efforts following the theft of lead from the roof last year.

"It has not been an easy time for the people of Wednesbury, but they have really rallied around the church," he said.

The church faces a £75,000 repair bill following the theft in December.

Congregation member Margaret Winsper, aged 61, from Dale Street said she hoped a new vicar would be found for the icon of Wednesbury.

"When people arrive in the town the church on the hill is one of the first things that they see," she said.

"It has a special place in the hearts of people in the borough. I cannot thank the people enough for their fundraising and we have raised just over £3,000."

Fundraising events have included a dance and an Easter bonnet parade. To donate, call the vicarage on 0121 556 0378.
