Caroline Holt has still not regained consciousness, a week after the assault next to a canal in Smethwick.

She was found in Bridge Street North by a cyclist last Sunday. Tonight police will retrace her movements and speak to late night revellers to find more clues to the mystery attack.

Det Chief Insp Tim Bacon said: "This is a major investigation with about 40 officers working on it, trawling through CCTV footage and searching the scene to try and find what happened."

Miss Holt lives with her parents in West Bromwich and was identified by friends after an appeal by police for someone matching her description. She was found just after 9am.

On Saturday she was at The Marksman pub, West Bromwich, with friends before going to the Explosion nightclub, High Street. She arrived just before 3am and left at about 5am.

DCI Bacon added: "There is this window between 5am and 9am where we really need to find out what happened to her. We urgently need to speak to anyone who may have seen her, either as she was leaving or during the course of that evening."
