Decision due over arts centre proposals

Proposals for an arts centre in Kidderminster could be in the balance unless arts and drama groups say there is still a need for the facility.

Wyre Forest District councillors will decide on Wednesday whether a scrutiny exercise should be carried out on the plan.

It was first considered several years ago following a call from arts groups for a suitable centre for meetings, studio sessions, rehearsals and performances. But the plans never came to fruition.

Proposals had been put forward for the possible conversion of the Corn Exchange adjoining Kidderminster Town Hall, to avoid costs of a new building.

But the Worcestershire Hub, a one-stop council shop where people can pay bills and get advice, has now been sited within part of the town hall.

Ray Harrowing, former secretary of the Wyre Forest Arts Forum and a committee member of Kidderminster Choral Society, said he doubted whether there would now be enough space for a multi-use arts centre.

"There is the music room in the town hall as a big performance space but an arts centre would also need meeting rooms, studios and small performance areas.

"I think bigger premises would be needed to ensure it became viable," he said.
