Roadworks put on hold after outcry

Major roadworks planned in Bewdley have been put on hold for more investigation after an outcry by residents and traders at a public meeting held to explain the timescale for the scheme.

Engineers working for Severn Trent, Balfour Beatty and the National Grid have been asked to rethink a work programme for mains replacements.

Deputy Mayor of Bewdley Councillor Derek Killingworth was among more than 40 people who packed the Guildhall during a public meeting.

And there was outrage when representatives announced they plan to close Load Street and High Street for 10 weeks starting in March.

Councillor Killingworth said: "They announced that they were starting at Wribbenhall and from March moving onto the town centre and closing Load Street and the High Street.

"This would have virtually wiped out every event on Bewdley's calendar including the carnival. We are already having enough trouble and Bewdley has been hit by shops closing.

"The schedule of work would have meant people living in Severn Side South and Lax Lane having to make detours of about ten miles via Stourport to get out of town.

"The only good thing is that Balfour Beatty, Severn Trent and the National Grid are planning to carry out work in one go."
