A major route into Kidderminster was reopened today to the relief of motorists who have been forced for weeks to take two-mile detours.

The main Worcester Road has been shut for almost six weeks while repairs were carried out to the Severn Valley bridge which spans it. Its closure has led to traffic chaos for commuters during rush hour.

But repairs on the Victorian bridge have now been completed and the road reopened today, four weeks ahead of schedule.

There have been long delays during peak periods since Worcester Road was closed in August for bridge maintenance.

Motorists have been diverted along Chester Road South, Comberton Road and Comberton Hill.

Severn Valley spokesman John Leach praised the efficiency of engineers. He said: "The work on the bridge has been completed four weeks early. Our contractors have done a very good job. I think the weather has helped and they have had extra men working on the job."

Meanwhile, the railway attraction has revealed part of the Severn Valley heritage line will be closed from October 6 to November 30 for repairs to be carried out on the top section and track.

Mr Leach said: "This is essential maintenance work that the railway had known about for two years.

"Train services will start from Bewdley from the weekend of October 11 but the buffet, shop and museum at Kidderminster Station will remain open and we also hope to have an engine in steam for visitors.

"Meanwhile we are opening a temporary car park at Bewdley in Stourport Road to cater for the extra visitors there. People turning up at Kidderminster will be able to drive to Bewdley or catch a bus."
