Visitors of all ages poured through the doors of the Arboretum for this year's extravaganza, the 57th annual show.

It was a fairly low-key opening, with no special guest or ceremony to launch the country's biggest inland lights show, as has happened in previous years.

But once the families were inside the gates of the park, it was a night of non-stop fun as they watched in wonder at the hundreds of displays.

Last night's visitors said they were thrilled with the attractions which included feature displays of children's television characters Dora the Explorer and Spongebob and Squarepants.

And despite concerns an increase in ticket prices may put families off going to the show, there were no signs of reluctance as people flowed into the park off Broadway North.

This year's event features a 1,200 seat marquee for live performances including Bob the Builder and Angelina Ballerina.

Kellie Garratt, aged 19, of Fullbrook Road, Delves, attended the Illuminations with Paul Hancock, aged 29, and six-month-old daughter Ebony.

"I've been many times to see the lights. They are lovely this year. I liked the Dora display. We were here for the start of it and we're really glad we came."

Karen Lloyd-Hickman, aged 43, and her children Daniel, aged 10, and Emily, aged six, travelled from Gornal, to see the extravaganza.

"I didn't the tickets were expensive. I think it's very good value for what is on offer. There is nothing else like this in the Midlands. The nearest lights show is in Blackpool. I would definitely recommend a visit."

Daniel said: "I've really enjoyed it especially the funfair rides."

While his sister Emily added: "I liked the Bob the Builder show because there was a surprise party for Wendy."

Walsall Council's marketing manager Lou Oakley said: "We are really pleased with how things went with our opening night.

"The children and parents really enjoyed the live shows which are new this year in our special marquee which was good to see.

"The weather stayed warm and dry and the forecast is much the same over the next few days so people can be sure of coming along to enjoy themselves."

The council is hoping this year's event will help to regain visitor confidence after attendance dropped by a quarter last year to 120,000, compared to 377,000 visitors in 1989.
