Now people wanting to bring boats to the National Waterways Festival face being told there is no room.

It is thought about 50 boats which wanted to go along will be affected by the discovery of the creatures.

Festival bosses have had to stop accepting mooring requests and instead open a waiting list while they discover how many water voles are in residence.

The Inland Waterway Association is holding the three-day event in Pendeford over the August bank holiday (23 and 24) in a move thatmay boost the region's economy by up to £1 million.

More than 300 boats will still be moored alongside the Shropshire Union Canal and the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, down to Aldersley Junction.
