Kings Oak Homes is building 34 houses and 15 apartments for sale at the site at Moss Pit off the A449.

Properties are being sold for prices between £163,500 for apartments to £482,995 for a top-of-the-range five-bedroom house. A sales office has opened on site and is staffed 10am to 5pm seven days a week.

The first show home – a five-bedroom Hampton-style house –will open for viewing at the end of April.

Mark Powell, sales director for KingsOak South Midlands, said: "Scholar's Gate is our very first development in Stafford and we are extremely pleased with its progress so far.

"Already a number of properties have been sold off-plan even though our show home isn't expected for another month or so.

"It has been mostly local families who have expressed an interest in the properties which are predominately detached four and five-bedroom houses. We also have some two-bedroom apartments for sale.

"These homes have been of particular interest to downsizers looking for a low maintenance home within an attractive residential setting."

He said they expected interest in Scholar's Gate to be even greater when the show home opens.

Work on the £10.6 million housing development begain in September last year and homes should be ready for buyers to move in by December.

The 60-room Garth Hotel became an eyesore after it closed in May 2005 and was eventually gutted in an arson attack following a number of vandal attacks.

Kings Oak bought the site from Corus Hotels and demolition of the hotel was finished last May.

The development also includes 15 apartments which are being built for sale as affordable homes.
