The accident happened when the Austrian-registered lorry collided with an embankment near the entry to the lorry park at the northbound services off the M6 at 7.25am yesterday.
Fire crews from Cannock and Stafford were called to the scene and specialist lifting equipment from recovery firm Autorite, of Willenhall, was also used to lift the vehicle.
A doctor and paramedics stabilised the driver, who was trapped by the legs, before firefighters used cutting equipment to remove the steering wheel and steering column to free him.
He was taken by air ambulance to Selly Oak Hospital with serious head and leg injuries and a broken arm and wrist. He underwent emergency surgery.
The slip road was closed for more than seven hours and police are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 08453 302010.

The accident happened 300 yards south of Junction 15 at Hanchurch, near Stoke-on-Trent, at 4.50am. One of the vehicles caught fire and a casualty was taken to hospital.
