BYD has announced its next model to arrive in the UK: the Shark plug-in hybrid pick-up truck.

BYD is one of the fastest-growing Chinese car brands, and since its UK debut in 2023, it has launched 13 new models. The Shark will be rivalling the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux in the electrified pick-up truck segment.

Under the bonnet, the Shark is equipped with BYD’s ‘Super Hybrid DMO’ technology; combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and 32.2kWh battery pack that produces 430bhp and can travel up to a claimed 55.9 miles on electric power.

BYD says that the pick-up’s design has been inspired by a shark, with its high-positioned headlights and bonnet edges pulled as far apart to replicate a shark’s eyes. The large grille and lower bumper give off hints of an open mouth, while at the back there is a full-width lightbar and BYD lettering embossed into the tailgate design.

The cabin is complemented with standard heated and ventilated front seats, grab handles located on the A-pillar trims and a 15.6-inch infotainment system.

In the UK, there will be just one trim level to choose from with all trucks coming with vegan-leather upholstery, a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, keyless entry and start and a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, where electrical appliances such as a microwave can be plugged in and powered via the car’s battery pack.

The Shark has a load bay capacity of 1,200 litres, a payload of up to 790kg and can tow up to 2,500kg.

Orders for the BYD Shark pick-up are open now with prices starting at £47,290.
