151 West Midlands establishments handed zero or one star food hygiene ratings in 2025 as Sandwell tops charts for number of least hygienic spots
After a year of food hygiene inspections across the West Midlands and South Staffordshire, 151 establishments have been left with ratings of zero or one star out of five.
Restaurants, cafes and canteens, pubs, bars and nightclubs, and takeaways are all rated by the Food Standards Agency, who judge the establishments on their attention to detail on cleanliness, food safety and food handling.
The ratings are designed to give potential customers an idea of the hygiene standards at food businesses across the region, with a rating of five being the best possible result.
A score of five is considered 'very good', four 'good', three 'generally satisfactory', two 'some improvement necessary', one 'major improvement necessary' and zero 'urgent improvement required.'
In total across Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley, Sandwell and South Staffordshire, 127 establishments were left with one star ratings, while 24 were left with a rating of zero stars.
Sandwell featured the most with 45 eateries, closely followed by Wolverhampton with 40. Walsall and Dudley both saw 31 ratings apiece, while South Staffordshire received just four.
In total, 85 of the 151 ratings went to takeaways. 58 went to restaurants, cafes and canteens, and eight to pubs, bars and nightclubs.
