Wynn Bentley, from Newport, thought she was simply heading out for lunch when local trike enthusiast Brian Benton arrived with a surprise.

Her daughter Paula, who lives in Portsmouth, came up with the idea after Wynn saw a trike on television during her last visit and said she would love to have a go.

Paula later spotted Brian's trike outside his home and stopped to ask if he would be willing to take her mum for a ride.

“He immediately said he’d be delighted,” she said.

Brian, 88, is believed to be one of Britain's oldest trike riders. The former classic car parts specialist started building trikes in 1993 and is now working on his 41st model.

“I use mine daily and get so much fresh air I rarely get ill,” he said.

“It’s my passion and I’m always happy to share that. It was great to see the look on Wynn’s face when we turned up and it was obvious how much she enjoyed herself.”

Brian was joined by his partner Ann Mansell and friend Steve, while Wynn's carer Debbie Langford also helped keep the surprise secret.

The group travelled in convoy to Telford for lunch before riding back to Newport.

Wynn said: “I couldn’t believe it at first but what an incredible experience - I absolutely loved it!

“I can’t thank everyone enough for making this happen. It was an amazing day and I’ll never forget it.”
