The Ethnic Minority Council (EMC), in partnership with Parkinson’s UK, is launching a new 12-week Chair Beats programme to support individuals living with Parkinson’s, reduced mobility, and long-term health conditions.

Originally delivered in community centres, Chair Beats has now moved online to ensure those unable to leave their homes can still access safe, inclusive, and engaging physical activity.

Emily Skeet, Area Development Manager for the Midlands at Parkinson's UK, said: “We are delighted to be working with the Ethnic Minority Council to deliver these new exercise and wellbeing sessions for people living with Parkinson's in the local community.

"Parkinson’s UK is committed to engaging more communities in meaningful and inclusive ways, while continuing to innovate in how we support people to stay active and improve their wellbeing.

"My hope is that more people living locally will be able to take advantage of the new classes and live well with the condition.”

Suffia Perveen, CEO for EMC said: “Chair Beats offers a fresh approach to chair-based exercise, combining movement with cultural music that truly resonates with our communities. We’re excited to bring inclusive activities that are not widely available to those who need them most.”

The programme responds to a growing need for accessible movement opportunities, helping participants to:

  • Improve mobility and flexibility

  • Support physical and mental wellbeing

  • Stay active in a safe environment

  • Connect with others

Dr Sadhu Singh MBE, Chair of EMC, said: “We recognise that many in our communities need greater support, particularly those unable to leave their homes. These sessions are a vital step in creating new ways to connect people online and ensure no one is left behind. We look forward to working with Parkinson’s UK to reach and support more communities.”

The programme is particularly beneficial for people living with Parkinson’s and those facing barriers to attending in-person sessions. Everyone is welcome.
