Political opinion: MP welcomes huge investment in local nursery
When I was first elected, I made it clear that with every day I spend in Westminster, I would be working for our children and young people here in Wolverhampton and Willenhall.
I’m proud of the work we have done so far, and even prouder of the work we will be doing to use the power of education, to bring down the cost of living.
Parents of young children in Wolverhampton North East will be feeling the benefit of Labour’s childcare policies, both in their child’s development but also in their pocket. Since Labour came to power, childcare costs for parents have halved, reversing two decades of rising costs.
For an average family, that’s savings of £8,000 per child.
And that provision is set to get even better in Wolverhampton North East, as I’ve just received the incredible news that Lane Head Nursery in Short Heath have successfully bid for funding, creating even more of those crucial nursery places right here in Wolverhampton North East.
Just like you, I know that we need more accessible and affordable childcare, and I am fighting to keep that promise.
Access to high-quality education is vital. It’s not just helpful with the juggle of work and family life, it’s also how we set our children up to achieve and thrive.
In recent years, when we’ve seen worrying numbers of children arriving at school not ready to learn, opening up access to early years education could reverse that.
This successful expansion is evidence of what can happen when you have brilliant local schools, working with an active MP who cares about this area, working with a Labour government to back our schools, back our families and back our children to achieve and thrive.
It’s part of Labour’s plan to drive a sea change in the way we approach the early years. Research shows that’s where we can make the biggest difference to children’s life chances.
Lane Head is just one of a huge 331 schools across the country receiving funding to create thousands of new places by repurposing empty classrooms to the benefit of children and families.
This way, we’ll deliver better finances for parents and better life chances for children, delivering on our plan to get a record share of children school-ready.
As your MP, fighting for you with a Labour Government, we are breaking the unfair link between background and success, so where you come from doesn’t determine where you end up and if you work hard, you can get on in life.
Because we believe that children growing up in our country deserve the best start in life – nothing less.
