HMP Stafford launches programme to equip prisoners with business skills
A new programme at HMP Stafford is helping people in prison leave with more than a release date. They are leaving with a business plan, a qualification, and ongoing support.
Social Enterprise, Entrepreneurs Unlocked, is working with up to 20 men inside the prison to explore self-employment as a realistic route to earn an income. Ten participants will continue receiving hands-on support for up to six months after release, including help completing their first tax return.
For many people leaving prison, finding employment can be difficult. Gaps in CVs, lack of confidence and practical barriers often stand in the way. This programme aims to remove those barriers by equipping participants with the tools, knowledge and belief to build something of their own.
David Morgan, Founder of Entrepreneurs Unlocked, said: “Everyone deserves the opportunity to build a positive future. Self-employment can restore confidence, independence and pride. We don’t just inspire people; we stand alongside them before and after release so they can turn ambition into action.”

Weekly small-group sessions cover shaping a business idea, researching customers, setting fair prices, promoting services, managing money and understanding legal responsibilities. Participants also gain a recognised certificate accredited by the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs.
One participant said: “When you’re inside you don’t always think starting a business is something you could do. This course broke everything down clearly, especially the tax side, and showed me there’s real freedom in being your own boss. I’ve gone from knowing nothing about it to feeling like I could actually make it work.”
Crucially, some sessions are co-delivered by business owners who have lived experience of the criminal justice system. Their presence sends a powerful message: change is possible.
After release, selected participants receive one-to-one mentoring, online workshops and support with accounting software, as well as help completing their first self-assessment tax return.
Participants will also have the opportunity to attend a specialist tax masterclass delivered by The Tax Academy CIC. They can receive a review of their tax affairs covering the previous five years, helping ensure any outstanding tax returns are completed and any penalties appealed so that tax issues do not become a barrier to starting a business after release.
A participant, hoping to be a Criminal Justice System advocate, concludes: “I wish I had been able to access something like this years ago. It is such a great course and it is probably one of the best things I have done to help me in my future plans.”
By focusing on practical skills, recognised accreditation and real-world support, Entrepreneurs Unlocked is helping to reduce reoffending and in-turn, strengthening communities across the region. Visit the website to find out more.
