Ex-athlete and coach Jim Roberson motivates Year 11 pupils
A message of motivation, mindset and mastery resonated with pupils at Star King Solomon Academy as internationally renowned discipline coach Jim Roberson delivered an inspiring day of talks and workshops.
Drawing on his remarkable journey from growing up in the Bronx, New York, to playing and coaching American football at professional level, Jim shared hard-earned lessons about determination, self-discipline and the mindset needed to achieve.
Now widely known as the 'Discipline Coach', Jim has spent more than two decades working with young people and educators across the UK, helping them develop the habits and resilience needed to thrive in education and beyond.
Speaking to the school's Year 11 cohort, Jim challenged pupils to think deeply about their ambitions and the opportunities that education can unlock. Linking learning to careers and future pathways, he encouraged pupils to see their exams not just as tests, but as stepping stones to independence and achievement.

Throughout the session, Jim spoke candidly about the challenges he faced growing up, explaining how discipline and determination helped him overcome obstacles and pursue his goals. His message was clear: achievement is not defined by circumstances, but by the choices individuals make and the effort they invest.
Turning inspiration into action, Jim then guided pupils through practical strategies to help them prepare for their exams. Together, they explored effective revision techniques and worked step-by-step to create structured revision schedules, encouraging pupils to use their time wisely and take ownership of their learning.
In the afternoon, Jim led a smaller workshop for a group of Year 11 pupils, offering personalised guidance and encouragement. Through discussion and reflection, he helped pupils recognise their strengths and unlock the potential within themselves. By the end of the day, pupils left with renewed motivation, practical tools for revision, and a stronger understanding of how education can open doors — doors to the future they are ready to create.
Reflecting on the visit, Anna Ingram, Vice Principal at Star King Solomon Academy (Secondary), said: “Our pupils were genuinely inspired by Jim’s message about ambition, resilience and taking responsibility for their own success. He challenged them to think differently about their exams and to see them as an opportunity to shape their future. The energy and belief he brought into the room was remarkable, and it has left our Year 11 pupils feeling motivated, focused and ready to give their very best.”
