Pupils reach for the stars with rocket-building challenge
Pupils at Lift Four Dwellings Primary, in Quinton, enjoyed a day of space-themed learning as they designed, built, and tested their own rockets.
The day began with an introduction to space flight, before the year 5 pupils got creative designing and labelling three different rockets. They experimented with a range of nose cones and rear fins before constructing their final models.
In the afternoon, the children put their rockets to the test, using straws to provide thrust and sending their creations soaring across the playground.

The class is now preparing to enter a national competition to design a sustainable aircraft. One entry will be submitted on behalf of the school, with the winning school invited to attend the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) in July, alongside other exciting opportunities.
Michelle Court, Principal at Lift Four Dwellings Primary, said: "The playground was buzzing with excitement as the children tested their rockets. It’s always a real joy to see them so engaged, using their creativity and problem-solving skills, and having so much fun. Days like this really show how inspiring hands-on learning can be."

Building on this, the pupils will take part in a follow-up remote session in April, where they will meet real-life STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) professionals. The children will learn about careers in these fields and have the opportunity to ask questions.

Lift Four Dwellings Primary is committed to delivering a broad and engaging curriculum that builds knowledge, confidence, and ambition for every child. Hands-on experiences like this space-themed project help pupils develop the skills and curiosity for the future.
Nabila Jiwa, Regional Education Director for Lift Schools, said: "It’s brilliant to see pupils so energised by this STEM project. Activities such as this rocket challenge are critical to bring learning to life for every child.”
