The strategy, titled Protecting What Matters, sets out how the government will work with communities to build a more confident, cohesive and resilient United Kingdom at a time of global instability.

Alex Ballinger said Britain has faced difficult moments throughout its history but has always come through them by standing together.

“Across Halesowen and the wider Black Country, I see people every day who are working hard to strengthen our community,” he said. “From volunteers who give up their time to help others, to local groups organising events or supporting neighbours. These acts of service might not always make the headlines, but they are the backbone of our communities.”

The new strategy focuses on three key priorities: building confident communities, creating cohesive communities, and strengthening resilient communities.

Under the plan, the government will invest in local areas through initiatives designed to restore pride in place, support youth and sports infrastructure, and strengthen neighbourhood policing to tackle anti-social behaviour.

The strategy also recognises the vital role that faith groups, schools and community organisations play in bringing people together.

Mr Ballinger said Halesowen’s strong community spirit demonstrates exactly why this approach matters.

“Our faith groups, schools, charities and volunteers already do so much to build connections between people from different backgrounds,” he said. “This plan backs those efforts by investing in communities, strengthening integration and making sure we stand up to those who try to divide us.”

The government has also committed to expanding funding for programmes that encourage community engagement and resilience, including initiatives that bring young people together through education, sport and culture.

The strategy includes new measures to tackle hate and extremism, strengthen oversight where tensions arise, and improve support for communities facing hostility or division.

Alex Ballinger said protecting the values of tolerance, respect and shared responsibility was central to the plan.

“Halesowen is a town built on hard work, pride and community spirit,” he said. “This strategy recognises the power of communities working together and ensures government is on the side of those who are already making their towns better places to live.”

He added that the government’s approach is about turning shared values into practical action.

“This is a starting point for building stronger communities across the country,” he said. “By supporting local people, investing in neighbourhoods and standing firmly against division, we can create a more confident and united future for towns like Halesowen.”
