Greyhounds take centre stage at Crufts as volunteers promote adoption

Crowds at this year's Crufts had the chance to meet some special four legged ambassadors, as volunteers from Home Run Hounds Greyhound Rehoming Charity came together to promote greyhound adoption on one of the biggest stages in the dog world.

The charity's stand at Crufts was made possible thanks to the generosity of Arena Racing Company, who funded the space so that every penny raised during the event could go directly to helping the dogs.

Entirely run by volunteers, Home Run Hounds proudly holds the accolade of being the largest 100% volunteer run greyhound homing charity in the UK, so support and events like this allow the charity to continue caring for the greyhounds and help them transition from track to family life. Every conversation at Crufts was an opportunity to spread the word about the gentle and affectionate breed, but the stars of the stand were definitely the dogs themselves.

Thirteen of the charity's currently "homeless" hounds attended across the four days, alongside sixteen happily homed hounds who proudly returned with their families.

The event has already had a positive impact with three enquiries about potential adoptions received so far as a direct result of the four days hard work, and volunteers hope that more will follow. Home Run Hounds would like to publicly thank all volunteers who helped the event take place, as well as members of Daybreaks Trust, Insight Hounds, Camping and Caravanning With Greyhounds and Sighthounds and TTouch, and most importantly, the members of the public who came to say hello and made all the hard work worth it.

The charity was set up just four years ago, with only one branch and space for nine dogs at that time. Since then, it has grown to six branches across the UK, space for 120 dogs and an army of dedicated volunteers.

With events like Crufts helping raise awareness and interest in adoption, the team hope the charity will continue to grow and that many more retired racing greyhounds will soon be enjoying life in loving homes.
