Housebuilder lays the foundations for youngsters to learn about construction safety
Fourteen primary school pupils enjoyed an educational trip to a local building site in Upper Tean.
The pupils from St Thomas’ Catholic Primary joined a team of site managers from top 10 housebuilder, Keepmoat, for an immersive experience to learn about the construction of new homes and staying safe near live sites.
The visit allowed the pupils aged between four and 11 to explore a construction site and learn about essential health and safety. The pupils were kitted up with PPE including high-visibility vests and hard hats to enjoy a guided tour of the scheme under development by the Keepmoat team.
Alongside this, Keepmoat West Midlands also donated PPE for the pupils to use at school and four scooters for the children to enjoy during playtime.
Matthew Jones, Assistant Principal at St Thomas’ Catholic Primary School, commented: “It was incredibly rewarding for our pupils to have the opportunity to explore a local construction site and learn about building, site safety and new housing developments in our area.

“Our learners are very curious, so it was fantastic that Keepmoat provided a dedicated time for them to ask any questions they had. Additionally, the donation of PPE and scooters was greatly appreciated by our pupils, as it will allow them to engage in imaginative play.”
The development, now called Mill Place, will create a range of two, three and four-bedroom homes featuring energy-saving technology such as solar panels and EV charging points.
Shaun Fielding, Regional Managing Director at Keepmoat West Midlands, added: “At Keepmoat, we take pride in working with and supporting the communities where we build.
“The site visit for the pupils of St Thomas’ was an excellent way to introduce future generations to the foundations of our work. It was wonderful to see the pupils engaged with our team and the surrounding environment, providing them with a unique learning experience outside of the classroom.
“As we continue to face a talent shortage, it is essential to build the pipeline early and expose younger generations to the vast opportunities available in the construction industry to inspire them to join in the future.”
Alongside this, Keepmoat has recently donated bird boxes to nearby residents to promote local wildlife and enhance the environment by encouraging bird nesting opportunities.
